09.05.01.01 Calcium supplements

Calcium Carbonate
(Effervescent tablets)

Formulary

Calcium carbonate 1.25g (500mg / 12.5mmol calcium) per tablet.

For paediatric doses: dissolve one tablet in 24mL of water to provide a solution containing 12.5mmol calcium in 25mL from which the required dose can be withdrawn. 

Calcium Carbonate
(Chewable tablet)

Formulary

Calcium carbonate 1.5g (600mg calcium) per tablet.

Prescribe generically. Current brand is Adcal  but this may change.




Red Triangle Adcal is not suitable for peanut allergic patients (contains soya oil)

Calcium carbonate & calcium lactate gluconate (Calvive 1000®)
(Effervescent tablets)

Formulary

Each tablet contains 1g (25mmol) calcium .

Note: Sandocal-1000 brand discontinued but has been re-marketed as Calvive 1000. This is identical to Sandocal 1000.

May be initiated in any care setting
Specialist to advise therapy and provide first 28 days supply, continuation in Primary Care
Specialist to initiate and stabilise medicine prior to continuation in Primary Care
To be prescribed as per Shared Care Guidance. If no SCG in place status reverts to red.
Red medicines are designated as specialist only medicines which should only be prescribed by a specialist, usually within secondary care (either due to the requirement for specialist knowledge, long-term monitoring requirements, or restrictions that mean medicine supplies are only available to hospitals).
A decision has been made either locally and/or nationally not to routinely commission this preparation. Do not prescribe.
To be purchased over the counter. May be prescribed for chronic, long term conditions or on admission to hospital if essential.
