02.06.04 Peripheral vasodilators and related drugs

Naftidrofuryl Oxalate 100mg
(Capsules)

Naftidrofuryl oxalate may be considered for treating people with intermittent claudication, starting with the least costly preparation, only when:

  • supervised exercise has not led to satisfactory improvement and
  • the person prefers not to be referred for consideration of angioplasty or bypass surgery.

GPs may prescribe naftidrofuryl as a trial treatment option for patients who meet the above two criteria in accordance with NICE TA223 or CG147.

Pentoxifylline 400mg (Trental®)
(MR Tablets)

No longer recommended by NICE for the treatment of intermittent claudication in people with peripheral arterial disease.

Restricted use:
Approved by DTC for the treatment of osteoradionecrosis of the jaw (off-label use). Dose is 400mg BD. Patients are to purchase vitamin E 1000 units daily to take with this treatment.

02.06.04 Other preparations used in peripheral vascular disease

May be initiated in any care setting
Specialist to advise therapy and provide first 28 days supply, continuation in Primary Care
Specialist to initiate and stabilise medicine prior to continuation in Primary Care
To be prescribed as per Shared Care Guidance. If no SCG in place status reverts to red.
Red medicines are designated as specialist only medicines which should only be prescribed by a specialist, usually within secondary care (either due to the requirement for specialist knowledge, long-term monitoring requirements, or restrictions that mean medicine supplies are only available to hospitals).
A decision has been made either locally and/or nationally not to routinely commission this preparation. Do not prescribe.
To be purchased over the counter. May be prescribed for chronic, long term conditions or on admission to hospital if essential.
